How to Serve during this Pandemic

In a time of such uncertainty, it becomes evident that we are actually all in this together. No matter our occupations, our economic status, our political beliefs….we share the same worries and fears, the same unknowns. We attempt the same life preserving practices and we ask many of the same questions. We realize that we are all in need of support. No one person or economic group is exempt. So….what does that mean for us as we strive to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a time like this? We can serve by supporting each other and those around us. Checkout some of these ideas with your families in the weeks to come….

*Call a church member to check in. Personal contact makes an incredible impact.
*Create a menu for your family using only items you could donate to Fort Mill Care Center.
*Order items online and deliver to the Fort Mill Care Center grocery cart outside of church on Sundays and Tuesdays from 9:00-2:00.
*Make snack bags with non-perishable items for the daycenter at Pathways. Deliver to church in a marked box for us to pick up. Let Elizabeth Eppes or the church know you have done this.
*Write notes to church members and mail or email each day.
*Write notes to men at Bethel Men’s Shelter. Collect and return to Elizabeth Eppes when church resumes.
*Write encouraging notes for refugees in our country. Collect and give to Russ Cody when church resumes.
*Make a list of daily “silver linings” of the extra time at home with family. Share those through social media posts or in uplifting notes to neighbors or church members. Mail, email or text one each day.
Example: “A silver lining is that we can realize how important we are to each other.”
*Make a schedule with your children of “the ideal day in” and attempt to make that happen together as a family.
*Contact one neighbor or church member each time you must visit the grocery store. Ask if they are in need of any food or home care item.
*Contact a church member or neighbor to see if they need a prescription picked up from a pharmacy. Use the drive-thru option, pick up, and deliver to their porch. Call or text them to let them know it’s there.
*Write notes or draw pictures and mail to children and caregivers at Thornwell. These children need support during this time, as do the adults that care for them.
Address:   302 Broad St. Clinton, SC 29325
*Take pictures of your family enjoying time together. Share with others through social media, email or mail to spread calm and happy thoughts.
*Watch the online video of worship service as a family. Pray together for those in need.
*Buy gift cards from small local businesses that employ community members. Use those gift cards later when you feel safe to be out and about. The purchase of gift cards now will support the business and better equip them to ensure job safety to employees.
*Donate to agencies who are supporting those in need: Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, Bethel Men’s Shelter, Pathways.
*Facetime or Skype a family member, neighbor or church member who doesn’t live in your house each day.
*Commit to a plan for your first service activity once social distancing restrictions are lifted. Think Community Cafe Food Truck, ISH-Group meal to the men’s shelter, finding and delivering a bike/lock/tube to the bike shop at Pathways, making sandwiches for Pathways, etc.

Stay tuned for other ideas as we traverse through this new journey. Wash hands, practice social distancing, connect with others in creative ways and appreciate each other.

Lots of love,
Local Missions Team
